Title

Disturbance of neurotransmitter metabolism in drug-naive, first-episode major depressive disorder: a comparative study on adult and adolescent cohorts

Overall design

The aim of this study was to investigate the tryptophan and related neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites in the circulating blood of first-episode antidepressant-naive major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. In this study, 31 first-episode adult MDD (adult MDD group), 35 healthy adults (adult control group) were recruited. To assess the effects of antidepressant treatment, the concentrations of neurotransmitters were also analyzed pre- and post-treatment. Plasma concentrations of monoamine and amino acid neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites, including tryptophan, kynurenine, kynurenic acid, serotonin, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, homovanillic acid, norepinephrine, vanillylmandelic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol, glutamine, glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid, were measured.
