Title | Disturbance of neurotransmitter metabolism in drug-naive, first-episode major depressive disorder: a comparative study on adult and adolescent cohorts |
Overall design | The aim of this study was to investigate the tryptophan and related neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites in the circulating blood of first-episode antidepressant-naive major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. In this study, 31 first-episode adult MDD (adult MDD group), 35 healthy adults (adult control group) were recruited. To assess the effects of antidepressant treatment, the concentrations of neurotransmitters were also analyzed pre- and post-treatment. Plasma concentrations of monoamine and amino acid neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites, including tryptophan, kynurenine, kynurenic acid, serotonin, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, homovanillic acid, norepinephrine, vanillylmandelic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol, glutamine, glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid, were measured. |
