Title | Determination and application of nineteen monoamines in the gut microbiota targeting phenylalanine, tryptophan, and glutamic acid metabolic pathways |
Overall design | In this study, the authors established an underivatized liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantification of nineteen monoamine neurotransmitters and related metabolites in the gut microbiota. The neurotransmitters and related metabolites included phenylalanine, tyrosine, L-dopa, dopamine, 3-methoxytyramine, tryptophan, hydroxytryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid, kynurenine, kynurenic acid, melatonin, tryptamine, indole-3-lactic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, indolyl-3-propionic acid, glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and acetylcholine. This method was validated in fresh fecal samples from chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) model of depression. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the following 2 groups (n = 6 in each group): (1) control group, and (2) CUS group. The CUS stress procedure lasted for 8 weeks. |
