Title

Tiansi Liquid modulates gut microbiota composition and tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism in rats with hydrocortisone-induced depression

Overall design

The authors examined the effect of Tiansi Liquid in a rat model of hydrocortisone-induced depression using behavioral testing, 16S rRNA high-throughput pyrosequencing and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics of the tryptophan (TRP)-kynurenine (KYN) pathway. A stress-induced depression model was established by intraperitoneally injecting hydrocortisone 40 mg/kg once a day for 21 consecutive days. Rats were divided into the following 3 groups (n = 10 in each group): (1) control group, (2) hydrocortisone group, (3) hydrocortisone + Tiansi Liquid group (hydrocortisone plus Tiansi Liquid treatment at the dose of 0.45 g/kg). Drugs were administered once per day during the model building period.
