Title

The antidepressant effect of deoiled sunflower seeds on chronic unpredictable mild stress in mice through regulation of microbiota-gut-brain axis

Overall design

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of deoiled sunflower seeds on the intestinal mucosal barrier, oxidative stress, gut microbiota, and metabolic profiles in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model of depression. C57BL/6J mice were divided into the following 4 groups (n = 10 in each group): (1) control group (no stress plus control diet), (2) CUMS group (stressor plus control diet), (3) CUMS + deoiled sunflower seeds group (stressor plus deoiled sunflower seeds diet), and (4) CUMS + whey protein-based group (stressor plus whey protein-based diet). The mice were fed with these diets for 7 weeks, then mice were stressed during the last 3 weeks. Short-chain fatty acids levels in the colon contents were detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (n = 10/per group). colon contents were also used for LC-MS-based metabonomic analysis (n =5/per group).
