Altered KYN/TRP, Gln/Glu, and Met/methionine sulfoxide ratios in the blood plasma of medication-free patients with major depressive disorder

Overall design

In the present study, CE-TOFMS was used to profile metabolites found in the blood plasma of 33 medication-free patients with medication-free major depressive disorder (MDD group) and 33 non-psychiatric control subjects (control group). Changes which occurred in the metabolite levels during an 8-week treatment period (MDD treated group, n = 10) were investigated. Ten patients received a naturalistic course of treatment with an antidepressant (paroxetine n = 4, duloxetine n = 2, mirtazapine n = 1, or sertraline n = 3).
