Title

Beneficial effect of increased tryptophan intake on its metabolism and mental state of the elderly

Overall design

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a tryptophan-rich diet on the mental state and tryptophan metabolism in elderly individuals with mood disorders. A total of 80 subjects, aged 74-85 years, were divided into two groups, including mood disorder group (Insomnia Severity Index > 15 and HAMD > 15, n = 40) and no mood disorder group (Insomnia Severity Index < 9 and HAMD < 8, n = 40). Patients with mood disorders received a tryptophan-rich diet with tryptophan content of 25 mg per kilogram of the body per day for 12 weeks. The concentrations of tryptophan and its metabolites in urine were determined using an LC-MS/MS method. Depression levels were ameliorated by tryptophan-rich diet.
