Title

Dietary of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids influence neurotransmitter systems of rats exposed to unpredictable chronic mild stress

Overall design

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of unpredictable chronic mild stress (CUMS) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) on central nervous system. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to quantify the levels of neurotransmitters and their metabolites involved in serotonergic, dopaminergic, noradrenergic, GABAergic neurotransmitter systems in hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the following 6 groups: (1) control group, (2) CUMS group, (3) control + n-3 PUFA deficiency group, (4) CMS + n-3 PUFA deficiency group, (5) control + n-3 PUFA supplementary group, and (6) CMS + n-3 PUFA supplementary group. The CUMS stress procedure lasted for 5 weeks. Six to seven samples per group were used for metabonomic analysis.
