Title

Reduced kynurenine pathway metabolism and cytokine expression in the prefrontal cortex of depressed individuals

Overall design

In this study, the authors conducted a postmortem analysis of kynurenine pathway metabolite levels and the expression of kynurenine pathway enzymes in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) of control and depressed individuals whose deaths had resulted from suicide or other causes. A sample set from 81 individuals, corresponding to 36 controls (control group) and 45 who had a diagnosis of depressive disorder not otherwise specified (depressed group) was used for analysis. Tryptophan, kynurenine and quinolinic acid levels in the brain were analyzed using GC/MS.
