Title

Decreased beta-hydroxybutyrate and ketogenic amino acid levels in depressed human adults

Overall design

The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate and ketogenic and glucogenic amino acid levels in adult humans with or without depressive symptoms in a large cohort using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. For participants, a CES-D score < 16 is considered healthy (control group, n = 18,150), and a score >= 16 points is considered to indicate a depressive state (depression group, n = 5,722). NMR-based human plasma metabolomics was performed.
