Glutamine has antidepressive effects through increments of glutamate and glutamine levels and glutamatergic activity in the medial prefrontal cortex

Overall design

The aim of this study was to investigate whether glutamate and glutamine levels and glutamatergic neuronal activity are altered in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of a chronic restraint stress-induced depressive animal model. C57BL/6 mice were divided into the following 2 groups: (1) control group, and (2) chronic restraint stress group. Mice were repeatedly placed in a restrainer for 2 h/day for 15 consecutive days. Amino acid levels in the mPFC, hippocampus and plasma were measured by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (n = 8/group).
