Title | Deoiled sunflower seeds ameliorate depression by promoting the production of monoamine neurotransmitters and inhibiting oxidative stress |
Overall design | The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidepressant activity of deoiled sunflower seeds, which are rich in tryptophan, in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model of depression. C57BL/6J mice were divided into the following 5 groups (n = 10 in each group): (1) control group (no stress plus control diet), (2) CUMS group (stressor plus control diet), (3) CUMS + deoiled sunflower seeds group (stressor plus deoiled sunflower seeds diet), (4) CUMS + deoiled and dechlorogenic acid-enriched sunflower seeds group (stressor plus deoiled and dechlorogenic acid-enriched sunflower seeds diet), and (5) CUMS + tryptophan-enriched whey protein-based group (stressor plus tryptophan-enriched whey protein-based diet). The mice were fed with these diets for 7 weeks, then mice were stressed during the last 3 weeks. Five hippocampal samples per group were used for metabonomic analysis. |
