Title

Age at menarche relates to depression in adolescent girls: comparing a clinical sample to the general pediatric population

Overall design

The aim of this study was to investigate depression severity in relation to pubertal timing and multiple gonadal and adrenal steroid hormones determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) based on a large psychiatric sample of girls with significant depressive symptoms. A total of 184 patients (with a total BDI-II score above 13, depression group) and 59 subjects from the reference cohort (control group) were included for analysis. Serum gonadal/adrenal hormones (progesterone, androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, cortisol) were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
