A next-generation probiotic: Akkermansia muciniphila ameliorates chronic stress-induced depressive-like behavior in mice by regulating gut microbiota and metabolites

Overall design

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidepressant effect of Akkermansia muciniphila in a mouse model of depression induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS). C57BL/6 mice were divided into the following 3 groups (n = 6 in each group): (1) control group, (2) CRS group, and (3) CRS + Akkermansia muciniphila group (stress plus Akkermansia muciniphila treatment at the dose of 5 * 10^8 CFU /mL, 200 uL). The CRS stress procedure lasted for 3 weeks, and Akkermansia muciniphila was administered via intragastric during the model building period. Five serum samples per group were used for metabonomic analysis.
