Overall design | In this study, the authors used a targeted metabolomics approach utilizing a panel of 180 metabolites to gain insights into mechanisms of action and response to citalopram/escitalopram. Plasma samples from 136 participants with major depressive disorder (MDD) were profiled at baseline and after 8 weeks of citalopram/escitalopram treatment. Baseline metabolites that differentiate between patients who have benefitted substantially (HRSD17 <= 7; remitter group) after 8 weeks of treatment vs. those who gained no meaningful benefits with SSRI treatment (<30% reduction in HRSD17 from baseline to week 8; non-remitter group) were also identified. |
