Title

Neurotransmitters and neurometabolites in late-life depression: a preliminary magnetic resonance spectroscopy study at 7T

Overall design

The aim of this study was to measure neurotransmitter and neurometabolite levels in the anterior (ACC) and posterior cingulate (PCC) of patients with late-life depression prior to and after 10-12 weeks of citalopram treatment using 7T 1H-MRS. Nine late-life depression patients (depression group) and nine nondepressed, healthy, age-matched controls (control group) underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment and singlevoxel 7T 1H-MRS at baseline and after 10-12 weeks of citalopram treatment. The ACC and PCC Levels of GABA, glutamate, glutathione, N-acetylaspartylglutamate, N-acetylaspartate, and myo-inositol were quantified relative to total creatine.
