Title

1 H MRS Measurement of cortical GABA and glutamate in primary insomnia and major depressive disorder: relationship to sleep quality and depression severity

Overall design

The aim of this study was to compare regional proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS)-derived measures of GABA and glutamate in three groups: healthy, good sleeping controls (control group, n = 25), subjects with primary insomnia (PI group, n = 24), and subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD group, n = 51). Single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) at 4 Tesla was used to examine GABA + and glutamate relative to creatine in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and in the parieto-occipital cortex.
