Title | 31P RINEPT MRSI and VBM reveal alterations in brain aging associated with major depression |
Overall design | Here, RINEPT and volumetric analyses using voxel based morphometry (VBM) were applied in a sample of depressed patients and matched healthy controls. Depressed in-patients were either treated with antidepressive medication or with electroconvulsive therapy and compared to matched healthy controls. 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging was conducted before and after the treatment phases. A 3D MRI dataset for volumetry was acquired in a dedicated 1H head coil. In total, 81 participants were included into the study, 46 patients suffering from a major depressive episode according to DSM-IV, of which 24 were treated with ADM and 22 with ECT, and healthy subjects (control group, n = 35). For 31P MRSI, data were compared between depression group (n = 19) and control group (n = 24) at baseline, and 14 in the depression group and 15 in the control group after treatment. Metabolite quantification was reported in institutional units. |
