Title

Increased ratio of glutamate/glutamine to creatine in the right hippocampus contributes to depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy

Overall design

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the glutamatergic system in the hippocampus is correlated with depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy. Fifty patients with epilepsy were recruited and divided into three groups on the basis of their Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores. The patients were divided into three groups on the basis of their HAMD scores: (1) Group I without depression (epilepsy without depression group, HAMD scores of less than 7, n = 25), (2) Group II with mild depression (epilepsy with mild depression group, HAMD scores of 7-16, n = 14), and (3) Group III with moderate depression (epilepsy with moderate depression group, HAMD scores of 17-24, n = 11). Single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) was carried out. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to investigate any correlation between the variables of hippocampal metabolites and HAMD scores. Metabolite quantification was reported relative to total creatine as the reference peak.
