Title

Combined effects of electroacupuncture and anti-depression drugs on the hippocampus and frontal lobe

Overall design

In the present study, the clinical outcomes of 75 depression patients, who were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and fluoxetine, were observed. Bilateral hippocampal volumes, as well as ratios of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), and creatine (Cr), before and after anti-depression treatment, were quantitatively analyzed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 1H-MRS. A total of 75 patients undergoing treatment for depression were initially included. Five patients withdrew from treatment; thus 70 patients were included in the final analysis, comprising 34 patients receiving oral fluoxetine (fluoxetine group) and 36 receiving EA in combination with fluoxetine (EA + fluoxetine group). The fluoxetine group patients were treated with the fluoxetine orally at a dose of 20 mg/d for 6 consecutive weeks. In the EA + fluoxetine group, patients were treated with both fluoxetine for 6 weeks and electroacupuncture for six treatment courses. Metabolite quantification was reported relative to total creatine as the reference peak.
